About Turtle Bay Music School

Since our founding in 1925, Turtle Bay Music School has fostered love and knowledge of music by providing high quality musical instruction and a range of related music programs and activities to motivated students of all ages, backgrounds and levels of ability. The unifying principle that guides all of TBMS' programs is the fundamental belief that individual creativity is a vital means of bringing together a culturally and ethnically diverse community.

Over the years, TBMS has grown from a small organization with a handful of students into a major community institution with a wide range of music programs. Our music offerings include:

• high quality music instruction in more than 20 instruments and voice for nearly 600 children and adults of all backgrounds each semester (TBMS has three semesters, Fall, Spring and Summer); 
  
  
  
• scholarships and tuition assistance for any student with financial need
  
  
  
• music outreach programs that serve more than 1,000 New York City public school students in Queens, Harlem, Hells Kitchen, Lower East Side and Turtle Bay;
  
  
  
• the Margules Music Therapy program, the only music therapy program in New York City (and one of the few in the United States) for at-risk teenagers in the foster care system -- a significantly underserved group;
  
  
  
• recitals, master classes and concerts at Turtle Bay Music School; and
  
  
  
• community concerts at New York City hospitals and senior centers.
  
  Our mission is rooted in the fact that music is a unifying language that crosses the boundaries of culture, language and financial status. TBMS students range in age from 18 months up to 90 years old. Up to 30 percent of our students in tuition-based music lessons/classes receive financial aid in the form of merit and need-based scholarships or work-study awards. No student is ever turned away for lack of financial resources. TBMS students come from throughout the five boroughs of New York City, as well as from New Jersey, New York State, and Connecticut.
